REVIEW – Patrón Silver (Blanco) Tequila

NOM 1492 –

COMPARATIVE TASTINGS SERIES – PART 2:  Patrón (Patron) Silver (Blanco)

First, Patrón’s support of its workers and community should be commended.  Second, there are some who bash Patrón mostly because of its size & success, as well as to boost their ‘purist’ credentials.  Third, it has to be said that Patrón knows how to market itself as a “premium brand” & how to stand out on the shelf with its distinctive packaging.

Having said this, Patrón Silver, while it is an overall decent, middle-of-the-road blanco that is better than a host of other mass-produced tequila brands, it is not on par with other brands like El Tesoro & Tequila Ocho that are around the same price point.

On the nose, Patrón Silver has aromas of cooked agave, hot black pepper, a strong waft of alcohol, & some citrus.

On the palate, it’s a bit thin.  It coats the glass only briefly before running down the sides.  There are flavors of cooked agave, a sweetness that comes & goes, a hot & peppery hit with strong alcohol, a bit of citrus & light vanilla, though the latter isn’t prominent, & vegetal notes.  There’s also an anise-like bitterness on the finish, which is relatively short.

Patrón Silver is a decent mixer in cocktails, but its price makes it uneconomical for most people to be a regular mixer.

What brings Patrón Silver’s score down further is its high price point.  There are just too many other higher quality, better tasting choices today to justify the main Patrón line’s high prices.
