REVIEW – VHW (Virginia Distillery Company) Cider Cask Finished American Whisky

On the Nose (with & without water): Crisp apple; baked or stewed apples with baking spices (like cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, & maybe cardamom); caramel; vanilla; malt/breadiness/earthiness; some citrusy acidity; honey

-With a few drops of water – raised up the apple fruitiness & baking spices aromas

On the Palate (without water): Baked/stewed apples with baking spices (like an apple pie, strudel); malt/breadiness; pepper/hot (alcohol?); notes of vanilla & caramel; honey; some anise-like bitterness (not unpleasant)

On the Palate (with a drop or 2 of bottled water; Smartwater): The drop/s of water (from a Glencairn pipette) cut down a bit on the peppery hotness & some of the anise bitterness.  The drop/s of water also bring out more of the apple fruitiness and the baking spices, caramel-vanilla mix.

*I didn’t pick up any distinct nuttiness noted by others, though this may be included in the “baked/stewed apple with baking spices” aroma & flavors that I get.

*An enjoyable sipper that I prefer with a drop/s of water.

*It smells sweeter than it is on the palate.  On the palate, there is an initial fruity sweetness that comes back later, but it quickly transitions after the initial sweetness to being pretty dry and a bit peppery/hot (though not unpleasant).

*Good viscosity in the glass & nice mouthfeel, though the finish is fairly short.

*Light golden yellow

*Reminds me of cider, but it is not a direct liquor-ed up version of cider; It has a distinct character while still displaying some aspects of cider from the aging casks.

-Used a Stölzle Lausitz whisky nosing glass.
