REVIEW – Código 1530 Blanco Tequila

NOM 1500 –

Código 1530’s (Codigo) bottle design is nice and stands out with the Jerusalem Cross logo.

I let it open up in the glass for 20-25 minutes.  It coats the glass very nicely with good viscosity and mouthfeel.  The alcohol hit and pepperiness are strong.  There are also aromas of cooked agave and cinnamon & baking spices that become more evident as it opens up, particularly on subsequent pours.  Initially, the latter aromas were more subdued due to the alcohol.  There is also some citrus, light vegetal/herbal notes, mint, and an earthy quality.  The earthiness and vegetal/herbal notes become more prominent over time.

Flavors include cooked agave with hints of sweetness (but not a lot), a bitterness that comes almost immediately after the initial sweetness that leaves a fairly prominent (& not particularly enjoyable) bitterness on the palate and back of the tongue.  There is a peppery/alcohol kick with some minerals and earthiness and salinity.

The bitterness gets more astringent on subsequent sips and the pepperiness is a bit numbing, though it lessens on subsequent pours.  It isn’t wholly unpleasant, but does have a “pucker factor” to it.  It isn’t bad, but I wouldn’t buy or recommend this blanco again at its current price point – in my area, it is around $50 after taxes, which is only a few dollars less than Tequila Ocho Plata and El Tesoro Blanco, both of which are far superior to it.

UPDATE (SUBSEQUENT POURS):

*The aromas and flavors remained much the same on subsequent pours.  The alcohol hotness and pepperiness remain quite strong on the swallow.  There is cooked agave sweetness, but the bitterness and heat after swallowing doesn’t mix with it well.  It isn’t wholly unpleasant, but, for me, is overpriced for what it is.
