REVIEW – El Tesoro Reposado Tequila

NOM 1139 (La Alteña) –

BATCH R-022

El Tesoro Reposado has a nice viscosity, coating the sides of the glass well with slow-running tears running down after a swirl.  It is a very light yellow.  After opening the bottle and pouring some into a Riedel tequila flute glass, I let it open up and aerate for 10-15 minutes.

On the nose there are pleasant aromas of cooked agave, cinnamon and sweet-aromatic baking spices, a very prominent sweet citrusy sweet-sour fruitiness (reminiscent of a Middle Eastern sweet lime), vegetal/grassy notes, some pepper, oak influences, hints of vanilla and caramel, and an earthiness and bright minerality.  The citrusy fruitiness is most prominent.  As it continues to open up, the cinnamon and sweet-aromatic baking spices become more noticeable.

On the palate there are flavors of cooked agave sweetness, vanilla, caramel, cinnamon and sweet baking spices, a prominent peppery kick and alcohol warmth in the throat and chest after the swallow (but not unpleasant), and some anise-like bitterness that melds together well with the sweetness to create a good balance.  The flavors make you want to take another sip with the sweetness causing a salivating effect like after you have a sip or a bite of something you find to be delicious.  I expected the citrusy fruitiness to be more prominent on the palate because of how dominant it is on the nose; it’s there, but it isn’t as strong as I expected it would be.  The earthiness and minerality from the nose are also present on the palate.

The mouthfeel is buttery and full, coating the palate very well.  There is a medium finish that leaves a pleasing combination of flavors in the mouth.  The aromas and flavors remained pretty much the same on subsequent pours after the initial neck pour.  The peppery heat remains, warming the throat and chest, which is quite nice.  The aromas remain delightful.
