Picked these up after a store tasting. I’m a big proponent of supporting local businesses, here Mt. Defiance Cidery & Distillery from my home state of Virginia.
I love crème de cassis and, although I usually prefer French and Québec-produced cassis, this one is very nice, capturing the sweet & tart of the black currants well & using natural beet sugar.
The Weber Blue Agave spirit, though I’m sure in part meant to tap into the growing American interest in tequila & mezcal, is intriguing. I didn’t initially buy it, but, after thinking on it, got back out of my car & bought a bottle. I’ll do a proper tasting soon. From the small plastic tasting cup (thimble) I picked up on a bit of agave & fruity sweetness followed by strong pepperiness and a throat & chest warming heat (not unpleasant &, in fact, the opposite). The spirit isn’t meant to be a copycat tequila and is produced by distilling agave nectar from Mexico made right after the piñas are harvested from the fields. The distillery also produces, in addition to this “blanco,” barrel-aged reposado & añejo expressions & a wild agave spirit like a mezcal.
