Building Your Own Palate –

It’s important to me to form/evolve my own flavor profile preferences & palate as I delve into spirits after many years away. What I want to avoid is “bandwagon-ing,” even if subconsciously. Instead, I want to experiment & test to form my own opinions in an as independent a way as possible. I also want to avoid consciously or subconsciously falling into one of the negatives of the additives/additive free discussion, which is (by some, thankfully not all, proponents) rudeness, snobbery, & elitism – I want to form my own views & be able to explain them so I can have (polite, respectful) discussions with others interested in having them &, if they’re open to it, recommending what I think are better (& often more natural) options.

A big part of this is experimenting with as wide an array of samples (brands & expressions) as possible. As I continue to build my palate & flavor preferences, the only way to understand exactly HOW GOOD my favorites (like the 2024 Tequila Ocho Plata Puntas – Mirandillas) are is to try brands/expressions that, personally, I do not enjoy, like Casamigos’ blanco. Sometimes, I personally haven’t enjoyed fairly widely heralded brands, like La Gritona’s reposado.

In my reviews, which I write in part to have a written record for my own reference of my agave spirits (+/& other spirits) journey, I try to be as fair and explicit as possible as to what I taste and smell and why, or why not, I like/don’t like a particular brand’s expression/s. To keep this affordable, I’m thankful for mini 50 ml bottles (more on those in a future post).

Pictured here are a few of the tequila expressions that I have/am/will be tasting & keeping tasting notes (using multiple tastings) & eventually writing reviews/tasting observations on.

I also try to consume (read, watch, listen to) as wide an array of educators & reviewers as possible on all spirits I’ll be trying.
