28 September 2024 – The Day the Penny Dropped for My Evolving Palate re: Single Malt Whisky?

28 September 2024 – The day the penny may have dropped for me & my evolving palate re: single malt whisky, thanks to an impromptu re-tasting of Virginia Distillery Company‘s Courage & Conviction Double Cask Reserve American Single Malt.

On a whim, I did an impromptu re-tasting, mostly to convince myself that single malts weren’t my thing. On the initial and previous tastings & re-tastings, the malty/peaty smokiness came across very strong on the swallow. It wasn’t something I enjoyed, like very smokey mezcals.

This evening, however, the Double Cask Reserve’s sweet fruity and caramel flavors, mixed with nice barrel spice, balanced out the malty/peaty smokiness to create a much more balanced, at least to me, flavor profile.

I have a little bit left and will try again on another day to re-test, but today may be the day when my palate has started to evolve re: the unique single malt profile.

I also did a re-tasting of the Courage & Conviction Signature Malt from my mini bottle & had the same changed experience – all the flavors seem more balanced. For both single malts, I started & continue to love the aroma profiles.

I’m a big proponent of supporting local businesses doing things right and, if you enjoy single malt whiskies & you’re in or near Virginia, take advantage of the final days of Virginia Spirits Month & go grab yourself a bottle for 20% off.
