El Tesoro is one of the flagship brands produced by tequila master distiller Carlos Camarena from his distillery (NOM 1139) La Alteña. Named after his father, the late Don Felipe Camarena, El Tesoro uses Weber Blue Agave from Los Altos, Jalisco, crushed by a volcanic stone tahona wheel (which is reproduced in miniature for its distinctive stone corks). The extracted agave juice (mosto) is open-air fermented in wooden tanks without agave fibers. It is then double distilled in copper pot stills and aged in American White Oak barrels formerly used to age bourbon. It is bottled at 80 proof/40% ABV using deep well water.
The winner of multiple top spirits competition awards, including a Double Gold Medal from the San Francisco Spirits Competition, El Tesoro Extra Añejo is aged for four to five years. Though it has influences from the oak barrel aging, the sweet cooked agave continues to shine through along with aromas of cinnamon and sweet baking spices as well as caramel and vanilla. On the palate, in addition to cooked agave, one can pick up flavors of dark chocolate, dry fruits, roasted nuts, pepper, caramel, vanilla, butterscotch, and minerals from the deep well water. The mouthfeel is viscous and buttery/oily/full.
The Extra Añejo builds on the natural base of El Tesoro’s excellent blanco and is packaged in a beautiful cardboard box with branded tissue paper.
