Spirits Bottle Photography Series – PART 8: ArteNOM 1146 Añejo Tequila

The brand ArteNOM was founded by Jake Lustig, an American who grew up in Oaxaca. He partners with some of the most respected tequila master distillers & distilleries to produce unique expressions of blanco, reposado, & añejo (anejo) tequila.

Produced by master distiller and blending master Enrique Fonseca at Tequileña (NOM 1146), ArteNOM 1146 is a rich blended añejo, compared by some to the ultra-premium small batch Tears of Llorona extra añejo, which is also distilled at NOM 1146 (though Tears is helmed by master distiller/creator Germán González Gorrochotegui).

The tequila for ArteNOM 1146 is first aged in former Cabernet Franc French Oak wine casks from France’s Loire Valley for 14 months before being transferred into toasted American White Oak barrels formerly used to age bourbon whisky for another 14 months, making its aging time a total of 28 months (over 2 years).

A deep amber color in the glass, ArteNOM 1146 has aromas of butterscotch and caramel, vanilla, citrus, and sweet cooked agave, cinnamon, and other baking spices. On the palate, it carries these flavors as well as a nuttiness, citrus peel, dark chocolate, and a creaminess.

Fonseca uses mature Weber Blue agaves with the cogollo (center shoot inside the piña) removed because of its bitterness. Steam roasting them without pressure in a steel oven for 30 hours with a 6-hour pre-roast to get rid of the bitter juice and a 6-hour cool-down period before the cooked agaves are handled, Fonseca then employs his own screw press to extract the agave sugars.

The tequila is double-distilled using copper pot stills and emerges at around 53% ABV (106 proof) and is then brought down to 41.3% ABV (82.6 proof) using reverse-osmosis demineralized water. The final product of ArteNOM 1146 is a blend of 60% Loire Valley wine 2-year cask-aged añejo and a 40% 3-year Loire Valley wine cask aged tequila, with this blend then being aged for another year in used American White Oak barrels formerly used for bourbon.
