Spirits Bottle Photography Series – PART 13: “Lost No More” – Lost Lore Blanco, Reposado, & Añejo

Lost Lore, a new tequila brand produced by NOM 1414 – Vivanco & Associates distillery in Arandas, Jalisco, Mexico, uses mature Blue Weber agaves cooked in stone/brick ovens (hornos), with the sugars (aguamiel) extracted using roller mills, fermented with champagne yeast as classical music plays (the “Mozart Method”), double distilled in copper pot stills, & cut to 80 proof (for the regular line) using deep well water. The finished tequilas are then put into handmade glass bottles with rather striking, rustic artwork on their labels.

Lost Lore’s production is overseen by master distiller Sergio Cruz. The blanco’s aroma profile is defined by sweetness from the cooked agave/baking spices and tropical fruit, an olive vegetal note, salinity and minerality (a wet stone earthiness), and some spearmint. The flavors on the palate are sweeter than the nose suggests at first, leading with cooked agave/baking spices and fruity sweetness with some acidity, minerality/salinity, and that vegetal olive note. The finish is peppery but balanced with cooked agave & tropical fruit sweetness.

The reposado is aged in ex-whisky American White Oak barrels for 12 months. Its flavor profile, both on the nose and on the palate, features cooked agave and baking spices including cinnamon and nutmeg, hints of caramel and butterscotch with vanilla, oak barrel notes/barrel spice, a waft of honey, some dark chocolate, black pepper to balance out the sweetness and buttery/oily/creamy mouthfeel, and a light minerality (the latter less apparent than in the blanco).

The añejo is also aged in ex-whisky American White Oak barrels for up to 36 months. On the nose, there are aromas of cooked agave with sweet baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom), caramel and butterscotch with a hint of vanilla, a cherry or berry-like fruitiness, some citrus oil notes, and light salinity.

Documenting my journey into agave spirits along with a smattering of other spirits after many, many years away – This blog is meant to take note of this journey including tasting notes, bottle photography, and other related topics.
