COCKTAIL SERIES – Mezcal (Durango) Madras

Cheers & Good Late Autumn’s Eve!

Mezcal (Durango) Madras

*1.5-2 ounces joven mezcal (Burrito Fiestero Joven)

*1 ounce Cointreau

*1 ounce no-sugar added cranberry juice

*.5-1 ounce fresh lime juice

*100% Blue Weber Agave nectar if desired

I used a light smoke mezcal made from (Maguey) Cenizo/Durangensis agave. It has creamy, buttery/malolactic “cheesy” (hard Italian cheese like, pecorino or parmigiano) & tropical fruit notes.

The finished cocktail is easy to put together (just shake with ice in a cocktail shaker & pour out over ice in a glass) & is a perfect balance of the sweet citrus orange of the Cointreau, the earthy/malolactic-“cheesy”/tropical fruity/light smoke on the back breath of the Burrito Fiestero Joven mezcal, & the tartness of the fresh lime juice.

***I fiddled with the proportions making a second glass & find that 1 ounce (decreasing from 1.5) of mezcal, slightly more lime juice (or closer to 1 ounce than 1/2 ounce), & more cranberry (1.5 or even 2 ounces) makes for a flavor profile more to my liking, though the original is good to. The 2nd glass still had the light smokiness of the joven mezcal & its malolactic & tropical fruit & earthy notes, but they were more balanced out by the additional cranberry juice. I also omitted the agave nectar because I don’t think it needs it with the Cointreau.
