El Mayor is a solid budget-friendly tequila brand produced by distillery DGL Destiladores – Distiladora Gozalez Lux (NOM 1603) run by the Gonzalez family in Arandas in the Jalisco Highlands (Los Altos). The distillery uses its own estate-grown Blue Weber agave grown at around 7,500 feet above sea level in sandy, mineral-laden soil that produces agave plants with high sugar levels (brix). El Mayor tequilas are 2x-distilled using a family yeast strain in stainless steel pot stills with copper coils and uses deep well water to cut to bottling proof of 80 (40% ABV).
El Mayor Reposado is aged at least 9 months in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels and the finished spirit is a blend, sometimes including some añejo if the Gonzalez family feels it needs more flavor or color. The master distiller is the Gonzalez family patriarch Rodolfo, and he is assisted by his son, Paul, and daughter, Graciela, both of whom are distillers themselves.

COLOR: Light straw yellow
AROMA PROFILE: a very fruit-forward nose with cooked agave sweetness with lots of baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves), vanilla & light caramel, light citrus, spiced oak/barrel notes, dried herbs & ginger, & black & white pepper. The spice profile mixes with oak & a “spiced butter” note. The nose has a musk-like note of raw agave in the background.
PALATE: Cooked agave & baking spices, black & white pepper, spicy ginger, fruit, vanilla & spiced caramel, a buttery quality, light citrus, herbal notes, & oak/barrel notes.
MOUTHFEEL: Viscous & full; Creamy/Oily/Buttery
FINISH: Fairly short (4-5 seconds) with the fruity spice & pepper lasting longest
VALUE: Solid mixing reposado & a nice “daily” sipper
