Founded and run by Arturo Lamas III, who comes from several generations of agave spirits master distillers, Lost Lore is one of my favorite tequila brands. Produced at distillery Feliciano Vivanco & Associates (NOM 1414) in Arandas, Jalisco, the brand’s master distiller is Sergio Cruz.
Lost Lore is produced using mature Highlands (Los Altos) agaves, stone/brick oven cooking, roller mill extraction of the sugars (aguamiel), fermentation in stainless steel tanks with classical music playing (the “Mozart Method”) using champagne yeast, 2x-distillation in copper pot stills, & cutting to 80 proof (40% ABV) with mineral-rich deep well water.
The lote (lot/batch) under review is #2. This review is based on multiple, spaced-out notes-taking sessions using Riedel Tequila Flute and Denver & Liely Mezcal glasses.
COLOR: Crystal clear & shimmering with shards of silver
AROMA PROFILE: Cooked agave & some raw agave muskiness, sweet baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), olive & brine-like salinity, prominent vegetal & herbal notes, black pepper, hints of tropical citrus fruit, wet stone minerality, & a hint of mint.
PALATE: Sweeter than the nose – Cooked agave sweetness with baking spices from the nose, strong black pepper mid-sip mixes with the sweetness, vegetal (olive) & fresh herbs, salinity (olive brine), tropical citrus fruit, wet stone minerality, & an earthiness & a return of the olive & herbs on the finish.
MOUTHFEEL: Medium with nice tears & pearls on the glass
FINISH: Long (10 seconds) – There is a nice warming heat on the finish.
VALUE: Well-priced, high quality blanco tequila that’s a fantastic sipper & robust in cocktails.
ALWAYS ON SHELF/BUY AGAIN? Yes – the only reason I don’t drink this more frequently is because it’s not easy to restock on it in my area & I generally don’t like ordering spirits for delivery.
