In my recent post, “Brief Reflections on Exploring Whiskies: The Road So Far,” I made mention of a cadre of whiskies of all types that I refer to as “Milestone Whiskies,” that is, whiskies that have fundamentally changed my perspective of (and taught me) the depth and breadth of what whisky can be. This is no small feat for a devoted agave spirits acolyte like myself.
This is the second in a series of brief posts highlighting some of these “Milestone Whiskies” reflecting on why and how they’ve changed my perspective on the vast and diverse world/s of whiskies.
1792 Bottled in Bond was my first full-sized bottle of bourbon after experimenting with a few mini bottles of other brands. Specifically, it was a 1792 Bottled in Bond Virginia ABC single barrel pick as part of Sazerac’s Barrel Select program. This bottle was the first bourbon that I was able to really get past the oak/barrel notes that I previously found so overpowering on the palate with bourbons.
I love its aroma profile, which is full of orchard fruits like sweet, tart apples, vanilla & sweet caramel, oak/barrel notes on the backend, and a hint of citrus. A dark amber color, 1792 Bottled in Bond’s palate is viscous at 100 proof (50% ABV) and the ethanol is light on the nose and moderate on the palate. Flavors include all those from the nose along with rye spice and black pepper. The finish includes a touch of anise and oak tannin bitterness and is of medium-long length at 7-10 seconds. In Virginia, the bottle is priced around MSRP (under $45), unlike other places in the United States.
I was made aware of 1792 as a brand and the Bottled in Bond specifically after watching a video review by a local “whiskeyTuber” within whom I chatted with and who gave it a glowing review and the aroma and flavor profiles both sounded right up my alley, so I took a shot on it when I found a bottle on the shelf. I am glad that I picked it up and have since picked up a couple reserve bottles, all different single barrels so I’m hoping they’re equally as good as my original single barrel bottle.
1792 Bottled in Bond opened my eyes to bourbon in a way that the mini bottles I’d experimented with previously just did not – this bottle showed me how good bourbon can be in terms of both aromas and flavors, starting me down the path of “bourbon exploration” that I’m still on.
