SHORT REVIEW: Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey

One of the most widely available American whiskies, this is made from a sour mash bill of 80% corn, 12% barley, and 8% rye and is bottled at 80 proof (40%ABV) using Cave Spring Hollow limestone spring water.  Jack Daniel’s filters its whiskies through ten feet of sugar maple charcoal in the “Lincoln County Process” for 3-5 days.  Old No. 7 has no age statement but is thought to be composed of 4-5-year-old whiskies.

This review is based on tasting sessions spaced out over time with two 50 ml mini bottles.

COLOR: Metallic Gold-Brown

NOSE: Banana bread, nuts, caramel mixed with light vanilla, brown sugar, oak/barrel notes in the background, light baking spices (chiefly cinnamon & nutmeg), light ethanol.

PALATE: Charred oak tannin bitterness initially followed by a slow but discernible transformation to a slightly buttery/creamy sweetness of burnt brown sugar, caramel, & toffee), medicinal ethanol on the back of the palate, extremely drying baking spices, & astringent oak tannins – The flavor profile isn’t that sweet though there is a darker sweetness that hangs around in the background.

FINISH: Short (4 seconds) – Finishes drying across the palate with astringent oak tannins & dried baking spices, some dark sweetness.

MOUTHFEEL: Light, thin

VALUE:  Inexpensive & ideally priced for a mixer.

ALWAYS ON SHELF/BUY AGAIN?  No – I wouldn’t buy this even to use as a mixer because I find the flavor profile pretty unpleasant.
