Overseen by master distiller and brand founder Marco Cedano and his son Rodrigo, Tequila Tromba is made at distillery Integradora San Agustin (NOM 1547) in Tototlán, Jalisco. Tromba is made from mature, 7-year-old Blue Weber agave grown in Los Altos at over 5,200 feet above sea level with only 2.5 cm of the penca left on to avoid bitterness which are then cooked in stone/brick ovens before roller mill extraction of the aguamiel, fermentation in stainless steel tanks, and 2x-distillation in copper pot stills. It is bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV) using deep well water. The añejo is aged 24 months in ex-bourbon American White Oak barrels from Jack Daniel’s.
Marco Cedano started his tequila-making career as an engineer and then a master distiller and distillery manager for Don Julio González before leaving in 1999 following Seagrams’ purchase of the brand. He founded Tequila Tromba in 2010.
The Lot (lote/batch) under review is 160822A. This review is based on multiple tastings over 5 months using Riedel Tequila Flute and Denver & Liely Mezcal glasses.
COLOR: Medium Amber/Gold
AROMA PROFILE: Caramel/butterscotch & smoky vanilla with baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves), cooked agave, tropical fruits (pineapple – sweet mesocarp & citrus notes), lightly caramelized & fresh banana, dried cherries & cherry skins, earthiness, vegetal/herbal notes, & light white pepper.
PALATE: Cooked agave & caramel/butterscotch with dark, smoky vanilla start off followed by vegetal/herbal notes, earthiness, minerality, dried dark fruits (cherries) & caramelized banana, baking spices from the nose (more prominent cloves), nuttiness, candied ginger, & oak/barrel notes with some anise & oak tannin bitterness mixed with creamy, dried fruit sweetness, caramel, & semi-sweet vanilla. The earthiness, baking spices, & light pepper round out the sweetness.
MOUTHFEEL: Medium – starts off creamy/buttery/oily but thins out.
FINISH: Medium-long (7-9 seconds)
VALUE: Very nice sipping añejo that also stands up well in cocktails.
