Using Tequila/Agave Spirits & Whiskies for a Grad School Seminar Discussion on Identifying Logical Fallacies

For a seminar discussion with my students on identifying logical fallacies in arguments, I wrote a one-page essay chock full of logical fallacies of argument. In small groups, the students discussed & identified these fallacies – they were on fire.

We then reconvened as a class & discussed the fallacies they identified & the broader issue of why being able to pick out fallacies of argument is such a key skill & necessity in processing information. In order to do this thoroughly, they read & analyzed my pedagogical exercise essay & also were asked to recall the information they have about me as the author to identify known biases.

I chose a lighter-hearted topic but emphasized that the concepts were exactly the same no matter what the topic.

The seminar discussion was superb. It also teed up my introduction of the seminar/class shared Eagle Rare 10 Year bottle, abiding by all requisite rules of the school & the university including being kept in my office.

Today was an excellent teaching day, the kind of day a professor lives for.
