Not a “new” new bottle per se, but a newly opened new bottle of El Tesoro Añejo – This batch is from Lote (lot/batch) A-017 bottled on 19 February 2024 and overseen by master distiller Carlos Camarena who has since handed over full reins of the distillery, Tequila Tapatio/La Alteña (NOM 1139) in Arandas, Jalisco, to master distiller Jenny Camarena. Made from 6-9-year-old highlands Blue Weber agave cooked for 48 hours in stone/brick ovens (hornos) before a 24-hour cooling down period, this añejo is produced using a volcanic stone tahona wheel to extract the aguamiel from the cooked agave, open air fermentation in wood vats with agave fibers (bagasse) using wild yeast. El Tesoro is distilled close to bottling proof (80 proof/40% ABV), so very little deep well water is added and the flavors remain very close to what they were at distillation. The tequila is 2x-distilled in copper pot stills and then aged for 2-3 years in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels.
The fruity citrus notes characteristic to El Tesoro’s reposado are present, leading the aroma profile together with cooked agave and baking spices (sweet cinnamon, nutmeg, light cloves), florality, light oak, citrus (sweet lemon) peel, fruity caramel, vanilla, honeyed white and citrus fruits, and fresh herbs. On the palate these aromas make themselves known together with more prominent barrel notes, lemon and orange peel, herbs (thyme, sage, mint), vegetal (jalapeño mesocarp) notes, and a kick of black pepper, anise, cloves, and oak tannins on the long finish.
This is an elegant demonstration of the beauties of barrel aged tequila made traditionally by experts in their craft.
