I’m broadening this series to include highlights of not only newly acquired bottles but also newly opened bottles, either for the first time or new replacement bottles (including initial tasting notes thoughts and impressions on them).
This is my first bottle of any Old Fitzgerald from Heaven Hill in Bardstown, Kentucky. Master distiller Conor O’Driscoll is in charge of the Bernheim distillery and oversees Heaven Hill’s historic brands including Old Fitzgerald.
Old Fitzgerald 7 Year Bottled in Bond (100 proof/50% ABV, as per regulations) is packaged in a 700 ml bottle and the bourbon is made from a mash bill of 68% corn, 20% wheat, and 12% malted barley. This batch was distilled in 2018 and then aged in level 3 char new American White Oak barrels. Heaven Hill will release two batches of this in the Spring (January-June) and Fall (July-December) seasons.
My very initial tasting notes include on the nose and palate roasted sweet corn, honey, brown sugar, toffee, graham crackers, caramel and vanilla, baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom), black pepper, oak/barrel char & tannins, dried orange peel, black cherries and cherry skins, dark chocolate, honey and brown sugar drizzled pie crust, and some tobacco. The bourbon has a creamy, viscous mouth feel that coats the palate well and leaves flavor notes for 8-10 seconds after finishing a sip.
