SHORT REVIEW: Mijenta Symphony Series No. 2 Reposado Tequila

Overseen by master distiller Ana María Romero Mena and produced at distillery Casa Tequilera de Arandas (NOM 1499) in Arandas, Jalisco, the Mijenta Symphony Series No. 2 is made using fully mature Blue Weber agave cooked in low pressure autoclaves. The aguamiel is extracted using a roller mill and is fermented in open-air stainless steel tanks before being 2x-distilled in a copper pot still. The reposado is aged for eight months in custom-made “symphony” barrels made from American White Oak from Virginia, Minnesota, Missouri, and Pennsylvania. It’s brought to bottling proof (95 proof/45% ABV) using deep well water. Mijenta uses sustainable materials including recycled glass, caps made from biopolymer of sugar cane fiber, and a box made from FSC-certified cardboard.

The bottle under review is #15642. This tasting notes review is based on multiple notes-taking sessions over five months using Riedel Tequila Flute and Denver & Liely Mezcal glasses.

COLOR: Very light straw yellow

AROMA PROFILE: Caramel & butterscotch, vanilla, creamy chocolate, sweet cooked agave & baking spices (cinnamon), brûléed banana & coconut, herbal notes, & dried orange peel.

PALATE: Exactly like the nose – Caramel & butterscotch, sweet cooked agave & baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, hint of cloves), creamy chocolate, brûléed banana & coconut, herbal notes, dried orange peel, nuts, & prominent black pepper on the finish.

MOUTHFEEL: Incredibly viscous, creamy/oily/buttery; Excellent viscosity in the glass with slow-running tears & lots of pearls

FINISH: Long (13+ seconds)

VALUE: Fantastic higher proof reposado tequila – It is similar on the nose & the palate to the regular Mijenta reposado but has a punchier, creamier mouthfeel & finish. It is not quite as rich, perhaps because the regular reposado uses several different types of wood barrels.
