New Bottle Highlight Series: G4 Añejo Tequila

I’ve had this bottle (and a couple reserves) since before New Year’s Day but have just cracked open one of them to share with my graduate student cohort. This bottle is from lote (lot/batch) #LG0009AE and was bottled on Halloween 2024.

Produced by master distiller Felipe Camarena at his distillery El Pandillo (NOM 1579) in Jesús María in the Jalisco Highlands, G4 añejo is made from Highlands Blue Weber agave cooked in stone/brick ovens (hornos), its aguamiel extracted using a custom-made roller mill called “Felipestein” before being fermented in open-air stainless steel tanks followed by 2x-distillation in copper pot stills. It is then aged for 18 months in very distressed American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels, usually George Dickel Tennessee whisky barrels. It is brought to its bottling 80 proof (40% ABV) using a mix of natural spring water and rainwater.

A light gold color with a medium viscous mouthfeel, G4 añejo has aromas and flavors of sweet cooked agave and baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves), herbal/grassy/vegetal notes, citrus peel, light fruity caramel and vanilla, light oak, tropical citrus fruit, black pepper, and robust minerality. It is a light añejo, demonstrating how the specific character of the aging barrel or cask is what is most important in what profile an aged tequila takes rather than only (or even mainly) the amount of time in the barrel/cask.
