This is my first bottle of Buffalo Trace Bourbon.
One of the flagship American whiskies produced by the Buffalo Trace Distillery, Buffalo Trace Bourbon is made from an undisclosed mash bill thought to be the distillery’s “Mash Bill #1” with less than 10% rye alongside the corn and malted barley. It is aged in heavily “alligator” charred American White Oak barrels for approximately eight years before being blended to maintain a consistent flavor profile. It is bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV).
This review is based on multiple spaced-out sessions using Glencairn and Denver & Liely Bourbon glasses over seven months.
COLOR: Mahogany
NOSE: Deeply sweet, pleasant aroma profile – Caramel, honeyed vanilla, baking spices (cinnamon & nutmeg), melting butter, light citrus, hint of mint, & a cherry/dried cherry note.
PALATE: Initially melting butter/creamy followed by caramel, spiced vanilla, baking spices (from the nose), robust but balanced oak/barrel notes, toasted/caramelized brown sugar, cherry notes from the nose, nuttiness, leather, & black pepper/rye spice pop on the finish.
The flavor profile is straightforward and well-rounded. The sweetness is balanced on the finish with the black pepper/rye spice and some oak tannins. The flavor profile benefits from aeration in the glass.
FINISH: Short (5 seconds)
MOUTHFEEL: Medium-long viscosity with slow-running tears in the glass; Medium mouthfeel
VALUE: Great classic bourbon & an immediate buy/regular shelf bottle if found for around MSRP ($30 or under for the 750 ml) – Perfect bottle to bring to group events, potlucks, & bottle shares.
