Sharing Bottles – What Spirits Are All About & (Trying) to Emulate Positive Influences in Your Life

One of my very few fond memories related to faculty from the university where I completed my PhD is of one of the few professors worth remembering from that period of my life making themself available to their students every Friday at the end of the day at a “resto-bar” – You didn’t need to imbibe to come chat with them about basically anything as a human being to another human being. I didn’t drink any alcohol during graduate school but would still go some weeks to talk with this professor and they were always welcoming, in good spirits, and adamant that no alcohol need be consumed to sit at their table, usually with other graduate student colleagues. This professor is one of the small handful of professors that I’ve been blessed to study under, with the majority being from my undergraduate life and not my MA or PhD periods.

I’ve been very fortunate to have been blessed with a fantastic group of professionals-graduate students for my first year in a new place. Honestly, if I were to go into a lab and design my ideal group of students, I couldn’t have made the collective more ideal.

Abiding by all institutional regulations, these are sharing bottles, my attempt at emulating in a different form that one light-in-the-darkness professor from what was otherwise a very (and needlessly) difficult time in my life with the vast majority of other professors who cared nothing for their graduate students and many of whom actively sabotaged them. The best way to honor people who have positively impacted your life is to try and emulate them and follow in their footsteps – This is my modest attempt to do this.
