Spirits Sample Share: Introducing a Colleague to Finished Whiskies

One of my favorite things to do with spirits is sharing them with other folks – it’s what spirits are for and how they’re best enjoyed in moderation.

The “theme” of this round of samples for a work colleague is finished whisky, primarily bourbon but also one rye. He enjoys straight bourbons and his favorites include Jim Beam White Label and Jim Beam Black 7 Year. I’ve selected different cask and stave finished bourbons for him to try without him having to take a flyer on a full bottle. I’ve rounded it out with a few non-finished whiskies that, based on what he likes, I think he’ll enjoy, too. Ultimately, I’d like for him to try some aged tequilas to see if we can shake his college days Cuervo PTSD.

The samples include:

•1792 Cognac Cask Finished Bourbon

•Laird’s Bourbon Finished in Laird’s Apple Brandy Barrels

•Angel’s Envy Ruby Port Barrel Finished

•Penelope Project X PX Sherry Cask Finished Bourbon (VA Single Barrel)

•Penelope Project X Oloroso Sherry Cask Finished Bourbon (VA Single Barrel)

•Minor Case Rye Finished in Cream Sherry Casks

•Jim Beam Winter Reserve (finished in a 2nd toasted barrel)

•Maker’s Mark – The Woodfinishing Series, 2025 – The Keepers Release

•Maker’s Mark Private Selection VA Single Barrel (Autumn/Winter 2024-2025), “Winter Spice” (a lot of different French Oak staves)

•Basil Hayden Toast (finished in a 2nd toasted barrel)

•Jefferson’s Reserve Very Small Batch Blend of Straight Bourbons (including a 20-year-old)

*1792 Bottled in Bond – Virginia ABC Single Barrel (Sazerac Barrel Select)

*1792 Full Proof – Virginia ABC Single Barrel (Sazerac Barrel Select)
