Named after whisky master blender Nancy Fraley, perhaps currently best known currently for her work with Still Austin and Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend, this special batch of the Virginia Distillery Company’s Courage & Conviction Cuvée Cask was distilled in August-September 2016 and put into 8 cuvée casks (225 liters) that held European red wine. The casks were broken down, shaved, re-toasted, and re-charred before being reassembled. The casks were dumped of their whisky on 15 June 2020 (3 years, 8 months, 18 days or 3 year, 9 months, 8 days). The average “angel’s share” loss was 3.3% per year due to Virginia’s cold winters, hot summers, and high humidity during those summers. There were a total of 460 cases (2,760 bottles).
The distillery uses special hand-hammered copper pot stills and a spirits safe made in Scotland. The fruit notes from the wine are very prominent on both the nose and the flavor profile of the Cuvée Cask, drinking like a premium sherry-cask aged/finished scotch whisky including many that are much more expensive than the Cuvée Cask’s $79.99 price point in Virginia.
