Glassware & Aroma Profiles – One of My Favorite Things About Spirits

One of the things I enjoy most about spirits, other than sharing and discussing them with other enthusiasts in moderation, is nosing them and parsing out what aromas I can pick up and what they remind me off from my memory bank of aromas and flavors that I’ve experienced up to this point in my life.

This week my latest snooty spirits glass arrived, a Glencairn Copita. Pictured above are 8 of the 9 types of spirits glassware that I currently have (from left to right: Glencairns, Glassique Cadeau copitas, Riedel Ouverture Tequila Flutes, a Denver & Liely Mezcal Glass, Stölzle Lausitz Whiskey Nosing Glasses, Luigi Bormioli Vinoteque Snifters, a Glencairn copita, & a Denver & Liely Bourbon Glass.

The shape of different spirits glasses is integral to highlighting and funneling away some of the ethanol while capturing the other aromas. Glassware is a vital tool to tasting spirits because what we can taste comes 75% + from what we smell. I’ll continue experimenting with different glasses and enjoying the continuation of my spirits journey.
