One of my graduate students will soon be promoted and to mark this major achievement and career milestone, his colleagues-seminar classmates are getting him a gift. In coordination with them and after doing some of my own research and chatting with a couple of friends who are into and know much more about peated scotch whisky than I do, I recommended this bottle as their gift bottle – they are all for it. In addition to it being a top-notch scotch, one of the stores I frequent also had it on major sale as a clearance item.
Since I was already planning on going to this store anyway to grab my own gift bottle for my student, I offered to pick this one up as well and did so today. I’m not sure if I’ll be at the celebration event for him since I’m currently furloughed, but I look forward to hearing what he thinks about this Kilchoman and my own promotion gift bottles for him when I return to the office/campus.
Kilchoman is an Islay distillery that grows its own barley – 440 tons worth annually – on a 2,300 acre farm. This PX (Pedro Ximénez) Sherry Cask release is one of the distillery’s limited edition special releases and this specific bottle is the 2023 limited release. It was aged at least 5 years in PX Sherry casks from Bodega José Miguel Martin in Jerez de la Frontera in Cádiz province, Spain. Unlike the previous 2021 edition, this one was fully aged in PX Sherry casks and not just finished in them.
