SHORT REVIEW: Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit Single Barrel Bourbon (Barrel #2480)

Produced by one of the “first families” of bourbon, the Russells, Kentucky Spirit, like all Wild Turkey whiskies, uses non-GMO grains, the family’s original yeast strain from over 60 years ago, No. 4 “Alligator Char” American White Oak barrels, and limestone-filtered Kentucky River water.  It is bottled at 101 proof (50.5% ABV) from 8 ½-9 ½ year-old barrels selected by master distillers Jimmy and Eddie Russell.  This single barrel was aged in the Tyrone rickhouse.

This review is based on multiple separate notes-taking sessions over 6½ months using Glencairn and Denver & Liely Bourbon glasses with varying resting/aeration times in the glass.

COLOR: Dark amber

AROMA PROFILE: Deeper, darker, sweeter nose than Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon with richer aromas of dark vanilla, caramel, toffee, nuts, baking spices (mostly cinnamon), toasted oak, & honeyed citrus peel.

PALATE: Rich & creamy oak mixed with caramel, toffee, dark vanilla, baking spices (cinnamon & nutmeg), black pepper, dried orange peel with honey, leather, dried tobacco, nuts, & oak tannins on the finish.

FINISH: 8-10 seconds

MOUTHFEEL: Medium viscosity with tears in the glass; Creamy/oily mouthfeel

VALUE:  Fantastic sipper with classic bourbon notes

ALWAYS ON SHELF/BUY AGAIN?  Yes – I have a reserve bottle & look forward to trying future single barrel Kentucky Spirit releases.
