This is part of the ongoing “New Bottle Highlight Series.” See past posts in this series HERE.
I’m broadening this series to include highlights of not only newly acquired bottles but also newly opened bottles, either for the first time or new replacement bottles (including initial tasting notes thoughts and impressions on them).
It’s always cool to walk into a store & see, completely unexpectedly, a bottle that you’ve never seen before. The randomness/by chance nature of it adds to the excitement.
I’m on record as being a big fan of Penelope, particularly as someone who tends to really like cask & stave finishing on whiskies.
Excited to have found my very first Penelope Estate Collection bottle, the 10 Year Private Selection. A blend of hand-selected barrels, this year’s Private Select is bottled at 106.8 proof (53.4% ABV) or just shy of what’s normally considered “cask/barrel strength” (though that number isn’t set in stone and I consider bourbons around 54% and higher to be cask/barrel strength. It is made from a mash bill of 74% corn, 20% rye, 1% wheat, and 5% malted barley.
As a lover of French Oak aging on whiskies and agave spirits, I’d love to find a bottle of the Penelope Omega 11 Year Straight Bourbon from this year, which is aged 11 years before an additional year of finishing in a Radoux Omega French Oak barrel.
But the Private Select in the meantime is a great find!
