SHORT REVIEW: Traveller Whiskey – Blend No. 40

Produced by Buffalo Trace Distillery, Traveller is a blended whisky that is a collaborative project between master distiller Harlen Wheatley and country musician Chris Stapleton – the whisky went through over 50 blend trials before the two decided on the final one and is named after the latter’s first album.  The mash bill is undisclosed and Sazerac says it includes no grain neutral spirits.

This review is based on multiple separate notes-taking sessions over four months using Denver & Liely Bourbon glasses with a bottle on loan from a friend which was slightly over half full at the start.

COLOR: Dark amber/bronze

AROMA PROFILE: Very light nose – green apples, green grapes, very light vanilla & caramel, light citrus, rye spice, & black pepper.

PALATE: Quite sweet – fruity notes (orchard fruits & cherries), sweet caramel & vanilla, rye & baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), black pepper, orange peel, sweet toasted corn, maple sugar, toasted oak.

FINISH: 5-7 seconds

MOUTHFEEL/VISCOSITY: Medium-long viscosity in the glass / Fairly creamy for the proof point with a moderately viscous mouthfeel.

VALUE:  Moderately priced whisky for those with a sweet tooth

ALWAYS ON SHELF/BUY AGAIN?  No – It’s almost cloyingly sweet & doesn’t have a lot of other distinguishing notes.  For my palate, it’s not particularly interesting, though I can see it being popular with those who want a very “smooth” and sweet whisky for cocktails or sipping over ice.
