I christened my first Denver & Liely Whisky Glass with a pour of my first Japanese whisky, Hibiki Japanese Harmony, yesterday.
First, the awkward – due to its engineering, which allows for maximum highlighting of aroma profiles while allowing the stronger ethanol to dissipate, the glass is a bit difficult to hold and swirl. There will be a learning curve to using it without feeling like I’m going to drop it. There’s also no way to hold the glass without unfortunately getting fingerprints all over it.
Second, the positives – and there are a lot. The glass allows the whisky’s full bouquet of aromas to truly blossom in the fullest way possible, much more than any other whisky glass I’ve tried so far. This is one of the things that I most enjoy as I continue to explore spirits, so this makes up for the elements described above.
Hibiki Japanese Harmony’s (review forthcoming soon) delicate aromas of sweet orchard fruits, hibiscus and other floral notes, sandalwood, light pine, sweet citrus, and baking spices explode out of the glass. This connects with memories of aromas and flavors, enhancing the tasting experience on the palate.
I’m a fan of the glass and it joins my love for Denver & Liely’s Bourbon and Mezcal Glasses. Highly recommended.
