After being asked by a number of folks to recommend good quality tequilas (primarily for use in cocktails but also to sip on) at a budget-friendly price (under $40-45 before Virginia’s 6% sales tax), I’m starting a new series of posts highlighting some well-made tequilas at or under this price point that are available via Virginia’s ABC system. Though I’m lucky to live not too far (though also not too close) to Washington, D.C. and southern Maryland where I can find other good options not carried in Virginia, not everyone has the luxury of time, etc. to go make that drive very often (and neither do I). Fortunately, Virginia continues to up its tequila game and expand the number of products it carries that are made well and are still priced to be budget-friendly mixers.
This series of posts will stay within the $40-45 upper-level price point (in Virginia) for its recommendations and will thus exclude some fantastic options that are just above ($50ish) including El Tequileño’s Platinum Blanco, Tequila Ocho Plata, Siempre blanco, and G4 blanco.
The photograph above includes some, but not all, of the brands and expressions that will be highlighted in this series including Olmeca Altos, El Mayor, Dulce Vida, Tequila Partida, Corazón de Agave, and Arette. Others not pictured include Tres Agaves, Libélula, and El Tequileño’s budget mixto blanco and budget reposado (not to be confused with its higher quality Reposado Gran Reserva, which is priced just above $50), and Zumbador reposado.
I hope this series will be of help to those in my home state looking for well-made, budget-friendly tequilas for (primarily) mixing cocktails as well as sipping (and some are great for both).
