One of the most heralded double oaked/double barrel-aged bourbons, Woodford Double Oaked is produced by Brown-Forman and is aged first in heavily charred American White Oak barrels for between 6-7 years before being finished in a second barrel that’s deeply toasted and lightly charred for an additional year. Its mash bill is 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley and is bottled at 90.4 proof (45.2% ABV) with no age statement. It launched in 2012.
This tasting notes review is based on multiple separate tastings using Glencairn glasses with varying aeration times over 8 months.
COLOR: Dark mahogany
AROMA PROFILE: Extremely sweet & rich – Rich chocolate, dark caramel & butterscotch, vanilla, dark cherries, dark raw honey, dark maple syrup, toasted oak, campfire marshmallows, & coffee with cream.
PALATE: Initial ethanol hit dissipates fairly quickly but the heat remains – The flavor profile is darkly sweet like the nose with almost burnt caramel & butterscotch with deep vanilla & baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, cloves), campfire marshmallows, dark chocolate & cocoa powder with hazelnuts (like a toasted Nutella), leather, black cherry skins & dark dried fruits (including dried apples), & finishes with rye spice, black pepper, & oak tannins.
FINISH: 8-9 seconds
MOUTHFEEL/VISCOSITY: Viscous & creamy/buttery mouthfeel / Medium-long viscosity in the glass
VALUE: Beautiful nose & starts off on the palate very well (if quite sweet), but then dies suddenly mid-palate, which I don’t expect for a $65 bottle.
ALWAYS ON SHELF/BUY AGAIN? Unsure – probably not because I like other toasted bourbons more.
