Produced at distillery Tequilera Milagro (NOM 1559) in Tepatitlán de Morelos, Jalisco, this reposado is made from Highlands (Los Altos) Blue Weber agave cooked in stone/brick ovens (hornos) for 36 hours. The aguamiel (sugars) is then extracted using a roller mill to shred and macerate the cooked agave and it’s then fermented in stainless steel tanks for 72 hours before being 2x-distilled first in a copper pot still and then in a column still. The reposado is aged 4 months in American White Oak barrels (the brand doesn’t specify if they’re ex-bourbon barrels). It’s bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
This review is based on multiple separate notes-taking sessions over 4 months using Denver & Liely Mezcal, Riedel Tequila flute, and Glencairn glasses with varying aeration times in the glass.
COLOR: Very light gold
AROMA PROFILE: Nose is led by prominent cooked agave & dried fruit, a vegetal green bell pepper note, vanilla, caramel, baking spices (cinnamon & nutmeg), black pepper, earthiness, orange peel, herbal notes, & oak/barrel notes.
PALATE: Cooked agave & musky raw earthy agave, black pepper & baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves), oak tannins, minerality & salinity, caramel, vanilla, ethanol, orange peel, vegetal/green bell & jalapeño peppers, & an ending note of anise – There is cooked agave sweetness, but that is overwhelmed on the finish with black pepper, ethanol, anise, & oak tannin bitterness & dryness.
FINISH: 5-6 seconds
MOUTHFEEL/VISCOSITY: Briefly oily/creamy, but dissipates quickly.
VALUE: Mid-priced
