Blackberry Gin Gimlet(s)
- ½-1 oz fresh lemon juice
- 2 oz gin of your choice
- ½ oz of crème de mûre (blackberry liqueur)
(1) Combine everything in a shaker & shake until well chilled with ice.
(2) Strain/pour over ice in a glass.
I made two back-to-back cocktails to compare and contrast how gins with different flavor profiles would affect the cocktail. I’m not a big home cocktail guy because I usually prefer most of my spirits bottles neat and have noticed that cocktails hit me more quickly than a neat pour, possibly due to additional sugars, which is another reason why I tend to opt for neat.
The first cocktail was made using a blind gin sample someone I know gave me (it turned out to be Military Special Gin, which I did/do not like neat – it tastes weak and bitter to me) and it made for a good mixer, giving subtle “gin notes” while also allowing the other ingredients to shine through in combination.
The second cocktail was made using a Virginia-distilled gin, Mt. Defiance Cidery and Distillery’s Gin Nouveau which has prominent citrus peel, herbal, and spice notes. It made for a completely different cocktail, also good but more gin dominant.
