Woodford Reserve’s introductory bourbon, this has no age statement, though it’s thought to be aged between 6-7 years, and is made from a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. It’s bottled at 90.4 proof.
This tasting notes review is based on a full 50 ml mini bottle using a Denver & Liely Bourbon Glass over two tastings with varying aeration times.
COLOR: Copper
AROMA PROFILE: Caramel, vanilla, dried cherries, sweet tobacco leaf, sweet corn, dark chocolate, baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom), honey, maple syrup, & toasted brown sugar.
PALATE: Oak-forward start followed by caramel, vanilla, black pepper, the baking spices from the nose, tobacco, bittersweet dark chocolate, toasted nuts, & a hint of honey – this isn’t that sweet on the palate.
The flavor profile isn’t bad, but it is disjointed &, for me, the oak tannins note is too high for my palate preference.
FINISH: 5 seconds
MOUTHFEEL/VISCOSITY: Medium viscosity in the glass with fairly slow-forming, thick tears, but it’s pretty thin across the palate
VALUE: Under $40 in my market, this would be a decent choice for a mixing bourbon
ALWAYS ON SHELF/BUY AGAIN? No – the flavor profile isn’t to my liking and there are a number of other options at around the same price point or less that I’d opt for instead as both a mixing bourbon & a daily sipping bourbon – These include Four Roses “Yellow Label,” Evan Williams “White Label” Bottled in Bond, 1792 Bottled in Bond, and Buffalo Trace.
