A blend of sourced Canadian rye whiskies from undisclosed distilleries aged for 6 years in bourbon American White Oak barrels with char level #3, PiggyBack Rye is bottled at 96.56 proof (48.28% ABV).
This tasting notes review is based on a full 50 ml mini bottle using a Glencairn glass over two tastings with varying aeration times.
COLOR: Gold-copper
AROMA PROFILE: Caramel, vanilla, prominent rye spice & black pepper, leather, tobacco, light smokiness, prominent oak/barrel notes, & some honeyed citrus notes – The nose comes across as much sweeter than the actual flavors do on the palate.
PALATE: Flavor profile is led by tart citrus followed by robust black pepper, rye spice, & drying baking spices (predominantly cinnamon & cloves), burnt brown sugar, leather, dried tobacco, unsweet & drying cocoa powder, & some honey.
Overall, the flavor profile is very spicy, starting & ending with strong black pepper, rye spice, & drying baking spices across the palate.
FINISH: 5-6 seconds
MOUTHFEEL/VISCOSITY: Medium-short viscosity in the glass with fairly slow-forming, thick tears / Medium viscosity on the palate.
VALUE: At $50 in my market, this would make a good mixing rye whisky because its flavor profile is robust & will stand up in cocktails & this rye may be good for those who enjoy sipping spicier, more drying ryes.
ALWAYS ON SHELF/BUY AGAIN? No – the flavor profile isn’t to my liking – My rye palate seems to be much more particular/pickier than it is for bourbons; I really like some ryes & have really disliked others.
