SHORT REVIEW: Yellowstone American Single Malt Whiskey

Using sourced 100% malted barley single malt whisky from MGP, Kentucky-based Limestone Branch Distillery ages its Yellowstone American Single Malt Whiskey for a minimum of four years in new charred American White Oak barrels before bottling it at 108 proof (54% ABV).  I’ve been a fan of the distillery for about two years since jumping into rye whiskies through their Minor Case Sherry Cask Finished Rye.

This review is based on multiple spaced out tasting sessions conducted over the past 13 months using Stölzle Lausitz Whiskey Nosing and Glencairn glasses with varying aeration times in the glass.

COLOR: Amber gold

AROMA PROFILE: Sweet cereal grains & malt reminding me of a buttermilk biscuit (I am from the South) drizzled with honey, juicy white/light orchard fruits (pears, apricots, peaches), light honey & honeyed fruits, floral notes (honeysuckle), & light oak in the background.  I don’t detect strong notes of baking spices.  The ethanol aroma is quite light for the proof.

PALATE: The proof heat comes across much more strongly on the palate than it does on the nose.  The flavor profile mirrors the nose very closely with a few new additions: graham crackers, dried dates, more prominent oak & oak tannins, some nuttiness, a hint of fruity caramel, vanilla bean, & the honey notes come across more as dark honey.  There is a peppery heat on the finish that gradually mellows leaving a nice warmth on the palate.

FINISH: 6-7 seconds closing with fruity sweetness, light caramel, baking spices, & some charred oak tannins with punchy proof heat.

MOUTHFEEL/VISCOSITY: Medium-full; creamy/oily/buttery

VALUE:  At $59.99 in my market, it’s a decent single malt whisky with nice aromas & flavors.

ALWAYS ON SHELF/BUY AGAIN?  Probably not because there are other single malt whiskies, American & Scotch, that I prefer.
