An inexpensive budget-friendly brand, Lunazul is made at distillery Tierra de Agaves (NOM 1513) in Tequila in the Jalisco Valley using an autoclave to steam roast the estate-grown Blue Weber agave, roller mill maceration to extract, shred, and rinse the aguamiel, fermentation using local proprietary yeast, and 2x-distillation in custom-made cognac stills with copper coils. The blanco is bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
This review is based on a 50 ml mini bottle using a Riedel Ouverture Tequila Flute glass and 70 minutes of aeration in the glass. I have a full-sized 750 ml bottle which at some point I’ll use to revisit this review as well as to use for blinds and gatherings with friends and family alongside blanco tequilas I personally like more.
COLOR: Crystal clear with shards of silver in the light
AROMA PROFILE: Simple/uncomplex led by roasted agave, spearmint, eucalyptus, light white pepper, light vanilla or vanilla cream soda (noticeably less than on the multiple lotes of La Gritona I’ve tried), & prominent ethanol.
PALATE: Muted with some initial light anise & citrus peel bitterness mixed with light black pepper, ethanol, a nondescript light sweetness, light grassy/vegetal/dried herbal notes, spearmint, light vanilla, & dried orange peel.
Neither the aroma nor the flavor profile are memorable & both are pretty muted, though not terrible either compared to other mass-produced tequila brands I’ve tried.
FINISH: Very short
MOUTHFEEL: Light-medium
VALUE: Budget-friendly mixing blanco – in my market this ranges from $2.49 for a 50 ml to only $39.99 for a 1.75 liter handle.
ALWAYS ON SHELF/BUY AGAIN? No because it doesn’t match my preferred flavor profiles for blancos.
