SHORT REVIEW: New Riff Kentucky Straight Bottled in Bond Bourbon

Produced by New Riff Distillery in Newport, Kentucky, this bottled in bond (100 proof/50% ABV) straight bourbon is aged in toasted and charred 53-gallon new American White Oak barrels for four years.  It is made from a mash bill of 65% corn, 30% rye, and 5% malted barley (sour mash; non-GMO; non-chill filtered).

Tasted using a Denver & Liely Bourbon glass.

COLOR: Dark copper

NOSE: Caramel & toasted brown sugar, vanilla, baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg), sweet corn, toasted oak/barrel, & apples.

PALATE: Toasted oak, baking spices (from the nose), black pepper, toasted brown sugar & caramel, vanilla, & cloves – The flavor profile is good but not exceptional – the baking & rye spice stand out on the sip.

MOUTHFEEL: Medium-long viscosity with slow-forming tears; Not thin; Coats the palate, but not for overly long.

FINISH: Medium (6 seconds)

VALUE: Straightforward, high rye bourbon; Not overly complex, but enjoyable.

ALWAYS ON SHELF/BUY AGAIN?  No – It’s a good bourbon, but its flavor profile just isn’t for me.
