I don’t know much about rums and even less about well-made rums. Over the recent holidays, I picked up three new bottles of rum, taking my total number of rum bottles from one to four.
The three new bottles are all from artisanal rum distillery Alambique Serrano in Oaxaca, Mexico, which is making a good name for itself in the craft rum space in recent years. The brand is helmed by a three-generation family of rum distillers, the Krassel family, the descendants of a German immigrant who fled his home country in 1917 and become a Mexican sugarcane distillate (aguardiente) producer with his Oaxacan wife.
The first bottle is 3 Años – 1st Edition, a rum blend from 12 casks of pot and Krassel column still rums that is then aged for three years in new French Oak barrels.
The second bottle is Single Cask #14 Ex-bourbon Cask 2021 aged for 24 months in an ex-bourbon barrel and bottled at cask strength (55.8% ABV / 111.6 proof).
The third bottle is a single barrel release of 3 Años aged in an ex-bourbon barrel that is aged 42 months and bottled at cask strength (53% ABV / 106 proof).

They join a bottle of Dos Maderas 5 + 5 Triple Aged Rum, a blend of 5-year-aged rums from Barbados and Guyana that are then shipped to Spain where they’re aged first for three years in ex-Palo Cortado Sherry casks and then for a further two years in ex-Pedro Ximénez (PX) Sherry casks.
Here’s to a new spirits tasting adventure!
