This is the bottle that convinced me to explore bourbons after not liking the first couple of other bourbons that I had tried before. As I wrote previously, this is one of my “Milestone Whiskies” – bottles that profoundly changed how I think about whisky as a spirits category.
I still have about ¼ of a bottle left and hadn’t had a pour for quite a while, so last week decided to revisit it to see if it’s changed and, if so, how. I used the best glass that I’ve found thus far to highlight the aromas of bourbon and ryes, the Denver & Liely Bourbon glass. The bottle has been open almost two years.
ON THE NOSE: The aroma profile is sweet with some ethanol – orchard fruits (apples, pears), caramel/toasted brown sugar, vanilla, baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom), oak, & citrus (orange) peel.
ON THE PALATE: Caramel, toasted brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, the orchard fruits from the nose, the baking spices from the nose, orange peel, punchy black pepper, & oak.
MOUTHFEEL: Creamy/buttery/oily – viscous across the palate & long viscosity in the glass
FINISH: 10-12 seconds
This is still a wonderful pour!
