I recently gifted a bottle of Código 1530 Blanco, a bottle of El Tequileño Platinum Blanco, and Mijenta Blanco to a colleague so he and his wife can explore the world of blanco tequilas as neat pours as well as mixers for cocktails. As part of this, I asked them to buy two additional blancos – Siempre Plata and El Tesoro Blanco. I wrote up a short guide about tequila production methods and production details for these bottles with the goal of having them pursue experiential learning about how differences in the raw materials (the Blue Weber agave terroir) and production methods can affect the final spirit.
Asking if they’d like to try some aged tequila samples, my colleague responded that he’s interested in trying more blancos because he now has a baseline with four separate blancos – I’m happy to oblige because, like many spirits enthusiasts, I love sharing spirits. The heart of spirits, for me, is about sharing with others. A bottle, no matter how well made, is only as good as the people you share the experience with.

I selected the samples to represent a range of blanco styles and price points ranging from blancos primarily meant as mixing tequilas for cocktails to sipping blancos. My colleague and his wife have had Patrón Silver many times before but I want them to be able to try it again and compare and contrast it with a wide range of other blancos, none of which taste or smell the same. Education (and fun) is what spirits are all about.
