*Follow-up to the review of the Lunazul Blanco.
An inexpensive budget-friendly brand, Lunazul is made at distillery Tierra de Agaves (NOM 1513) in Tequila in the Jalisco Valley using an autoclave to steam roast the estate-grown Blue Weber agave, roller mill maceration to extract, shred, and rinse the aguamiel, fermentation using local proprietary yeast, and 2x-distillation in custom-made cognac stills with copper coils. The blanco is bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV).
This review is based on a 50 ml mini bottle using a Riedel Ouverture Tequila Flute glass over two separate tastings. I have a full-sized 750 ml bottle which at some point I’ll use to revisit this review as well as to use for blinds and gatherings with friends and family alongside reposado tequilas I personally like more.

COLOR: Gold
AROMA PROFILE: Extremely light, simple, & uncomplex – Initially it smelled like almost nothing, but aeration brought out very light hints of tropical fruit, white pepper, some ethanol, light citrus (lemon zest/peel), light notes of vanilla, & extremely light oak/barrel notes.
PALATE: Very ethanol-forward followed by strong citrus, a light non-descript sweetness that’s rather fleeting, some anise bitterness, herbal (spearmint) notes, a jalapeño note (but not overly spicy & more akin to a de-seeded pepper), minerality, & baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg) & some roasted agave. It tastes nothing “like whisky,” contrary to some tequila folks’ claims – indeed, the oak/barrel notes are quite muted.
Neither the aroma nor the flavor profile are memorable & both are pretty muted, though not terrible either compared to other mass-produced tequila brands I’ve tried.
FINISH: Very short
MOUTHFEEL: Light-medium
VALUE: Budget-friendly mixing blanco – in my market this ranges from $22.99 for a 750 ml to only $41.99 for a 1.75 liter handle.
ALWAYS ON SHELF/BUY AGAIN? No, I’d rather buy other reposados I enjoy sipping much, much more.
