If an earthy blanco tequila and a funky non-tequila mezcal got married and had a baby, it would be Madre Blanco Tequila. As a hectic work week comes closer to its end, I needed something earthy, funky, and malolactic on my palate and this is all of those things in spades.
Produced by distillery Tequila Tepozán (NOM 1584) located in San Julián in the Jalisco Highlands, this blanco uses estate-grown Blue Weber agave at peak maturity from 7,500 feet above sea level that are delivered on donkey-back for processing. The harvested agave is cooked in a brick/stone horno oven for two days before its aguamiel sugars are extracted using a roller mill and then fermented in open-air stainless steel tanks using wild ambient yeast. The blanco is 2x-distilled in stainless steel pot stills and brought to the bottling proof of 96 (48% ABV) using volcanic deep well water from almost 1,500 feet underground.
Both the aroma and flavor profiles of Madre Blanco are beautifully funky and earthy with powerful notes of sweet roasted and musky raw agave, baking spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves), punchy minerality mixed with some salinity, “green notes” (fresh herbs, floral notes, green bell pepper, green jalapeño pepper), black pepper, prominent citrus peel/zest (lemon and lime), and anise.
The viscosity both in the glass and across the palate is creamy/buttery/oily and the blanco has a long finish punctuated by a balance of earthy, funky sweetness, black pepper and baking spices, anise, the minerality and salinity, and the “green” and floral notes.
